The Manager of Laboratory Medicine at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center manages the Clinical Pathology (CP), Anatomic Pathology (AP), and Phlebotomy sections in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. They facilitate the integration and management of daily functions within assigned areas and act as an institutional resource to medical staff, ensuring optimal workflow and client satisfaction. They provide management support for the section supervisors in the daily operations of assigned areas. They also coordinate long-term planning activities from clinical and operational perspectives and work to integrate the institutional perspective into local operating systems.


Responsibilities
  1. Provides management direction to laboratory staff and medical directors, including phlebotomy and their operations, to ensure the labs function smoothly and provide a high level of quality laboratory services that meet the needs of the providers, patients, and others.
  2. Supports the director in reviewing the annual budget and developing strategies for improvement of deviations from budget.
  3. Provides leadership and direction for the laboratory in maximizing revenues and minimizing operating expenses by working with the director to periodically review patient billing, coding practices, compliance, and fee structure. Implements cost control measures. Coordinates activities with the institutional operating plan and the department's financial plan.
  4. Serves as a resource to the laboratory medical staff to ensure high-quality and timely performance of delivering laboratory services.
  5. Initiates and reviews proposals for modifying laboratory operational systems and implements necessary changes.
  6. Helps manage outreach services.
  7. Handles operational needs and assignments, which may include quality assurance, risk management reports, personnel issues, the integration of lab services with other departments, etc.
  8. Manages the laboratory in areas of policy and procedure writing and personnel issues.
  9. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, MT (ASCP) or equivalent in basic sciences education and clinical lab experience with 5 years of progressively higher level management/supervisory experience required.
  • Master's in Business administration or health administration or related clinical science field preferred.

Required Licensure/Certifications

- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) OR Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) OR Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT - AMT)

  • Pay Range: $92,476.80/Yr. - $147,950.40/Yr. (Based on 40 hours per week, otherwise pro rata)
