Job Description

This level requires special skills and knowledge in several areas such as coding, data processing, and billing systems, governmental systems, and programs. Identifies specified malignant cases to be abstracted and reported by the UCSF Medical Center Cancer Registry from various reports, medical records, and electronic files. Abstracts and codes information in the prescribed format to satisfy the requirements of the State, Commission on Cancer, and Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program of the National Cancer Institute. Maintains systems programs for tracking cases and quality control. Must be familiar with oncology treatment guidelines and practices. Must be able to coordinate and take the lead on quality control projects involving other registrars in the department. Completes assignments within the designated time frame and according to the requested specifications. Certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) is required.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5 yrs of relevant hospital experience, 3 years of which must be in abstracting complex cases in facilities such as an Academic/Teaching Cancer Center and/or a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

  • Requires a complete and accurate knowledge of mandatory California Cancer Registry reportability, coding, and abstracting requirements, and knowledge of current mandatory standards for cancer program accreditation by the American College of Surgeons (Commission on Cancer).

  • Must have a thorough knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, oncology terminology, and oncology physiology, and oncology diagnostic and treatment modalities.

  • Must be proficient in morphology and topographic site coding by International Classification of Diseases (both ICD-9 and ICD-0). Expertise is required in current staging schemes (SEER Summary, SEER Extent of Disease, Collaborative Stage and American Joint Committee Cancer Staging (TNM).

  • Must have good computer skills with a working knowledge of the CNExT cancer reporting software, Cancer Alert System (CAS) casefinding module, MS Word and Excel or other spreadsheet and word processing applications.

  • Must be familiar with extracting cancer information from EPIC electronic medical record software,

  • Must be able to abstract full case in 1.5-2 hours maximum for analytic cases, and to meet minimum quota of 80-100 cases per month if employed full time.

  • Must be able to manipulate the database for report and studies for researchers and administrators, as well as clinicians. Must have good communication and writing skills.

  • Must have CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) current certification by the National Cancer Registrars Association.

  • Must be able to navigate remote access through Citrix Receiver application, and have a computer that allows installation of Big Fix application for network identification, Pulse Secure/DUO 2-factor authentication application, runs MS Windows 10, and that can demonstrate latest DDPE encryption.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must have CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) current certification by the National Board for Certification of Registrars (NBCR), and have annual continuing education units (CEUs) monitored for continuous certification by the National Cancer Registrars Association.
