Key Responsibilities

Cardiac Ultrasound Studies

• Perform ultrasound studies of the heart including 2D/3D, M-mode, Doppler, and color interrogation in the echo lab, a combined inpatient/outpatient setting.
• Perform portable/bedside studies in the ICU, patient care units, emergency department, cath lab or operating rooms as required.
• The average number of studies per day per sonographer is 6, but can vary.
• Use IV injection of agitated saline or echo contrast in appropriately selected patients.
• Collect accurate images and measurements, using the ultrasound machine to process echocardiograms including data entry, editing, record keeping, and data management.
• Interpretation of studies and creation of preliminary reports.
• Maintain quality, consistency, hygiene and follow laboratory and hospital protocols.
• Participate in hazardous waste management including proper disposal of waste materials, disinfecting and cleaning probes (TTE and TEE) and filing necessary forms.

Stress Testing

• Performance of exercise and pharmacologic stress echocardiography with or without contrast.
• Assist with treadmill stress testing and recording of 12-lead ECG’s rarely when lab is short staffed.

Patient Care

• Interact with a broad spectrum of patients and demonstrate compassion, respect, patience and cultural sensitivity in preparing the patient for the exam and during its performance.
• Explain the purpose and procedure of each test to the patient.
• Attend to patient after exam is completed and provide follow-up information about the test.
• Serve as a liaison with patient units and other departments to ensure adequate and timely patient transport.
• Demonstrate awareness and appropriate response to patient-specific issues, including infection control and high-risk situations.
• Respond to emergency situations and triage appropriately according to urgency.

Provide High Quality Service

Research and Quality Improvement

• Foster a culture that values education, research and quality improvement.
• Participate in ongoing QI projects, protocol development and personnel training.
• Support research studies within and outside the division, perform research echo studies, maintain the integrity of data, collaborate, and follow research protocols to ensure completeness.

Teaching and Supervision

• Provide orientation, supervision and hands-on teaching to fellows, residents, and sonography students on the use of ultrasound equipment and technical performance of cardiac ultrasounds.

Administrative

• Perform scheduling, supply restocking, equipment and space cleaning/maintenance and other administrative tasks related to echocardiography as needed.
• Maintain required professional licensing, training, and credentials.
