Genetic Counselor - Physician's Office - Cancer Institute at St. Francis Medical Center
Primary Function/General Purpose of Position
The Genetic Counselor is responsible for providing genetic counseling to patients, parents and families.
Essential Job Functions
Gathers family and medical history and provides pre and post-test genetic counseling to patients and/or families at risk of hereditary cancer disorders
Discusses benefits and limitations of genetic testing options. Obtains informed consent.
Documents in patient charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patient; documents case and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality.
Provides education to patients and families regarding hereditary cancer disorders, personalized cancer risks, and available medical management strategies.
Develops and presents educational and related programs as appropriate.
Coordinates and supports the execution of research of protocol as needed, including recruitment and assessment of research subjects, provision of patient advice and support, and maintenance of research records.
Performs associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include special projects and correspondence.
Provides patient care/counseling to adult patients.

Licensing/Certification
Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC), American Board of Genetic Counseling (required)
Education
Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or directly equivalent discipline (required) from an Accreditation Counsel for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) accredited program.
Work Experience
2 years of experience working in a same or similar position (required)
Training
EPIC Electronic Health Record (preferred)
Skills
Knowledge of genetic testing options
Knowledge of genetic conditions
Strong oral and written communication
