This position will be on a temporary contract for no more than six (6) months.   RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with preventive maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of facility mechanical systems, equipment, buildings, and grounds. Complete work orders, perform general maintenance tasks, and support projects such as painting, plumbing repairs, furniture moves, lighting replacement, and equipment installation. Help maintain a safe, clean, and functional environment by inspecting buildings, grounds, and equipment, including snow removal and seasonal maintenance. Maintain accurate maintenance records and assist with inventory, supply ordering, and regulatory compliance activities. Respond promptly to maintenance requests while supporting emergency repairs, preventive maintenance, and departmental priorities. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED; experience in general maintenance and painting preferred. Valid Alaska driver's license required. Knowledge of the safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools, along with basic computer proficiency. Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and customer service skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks. Ability to read, write, and understand English and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to work with attention to detail, remain flexible, and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment. Physical Requirements: Must be able to pass a Job Function Test and safely lift, bend, stoop, climb ladders, crawl in confined spaces, shovel snow, and perform physically demanding maintenance tasks. ENVIRONMENT The South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22-bed Acute Care Critical Access Hospital and 28-bed Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska. The Assistant Facilities Engineer works throughout South Peninsula Hospital, including the hospital, long-term care unit, clinics, office buildings, and campus grounds. The role involves both indoor and outdoor work and may require exposure to varying weather conditions, temperature extremes, dust, humidity, and occasional confined or dirty spaces. Work schedules are typically daytime hours but may vary based on operational needs and emergency situations. Job Hazard: This position requires working around hazardous materials, powered equipment, and mechanical systems while following established safety procedures, including lockout/tagout practices and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
