Histology Assistant

A Brief Overview
The Histology Assistant will perform duties in the histology and cytology sections of the Lab to include, but not limited, accessioning specimens, equipment and reagent management, registering specimens, preparing mail-outs, cytology specimen preparation, and picking-up specimens from the Operating Room, Main Lab or other locations. The Histology Assistant will also file and retrieve slides/blocks and assist pathologists and pathology assistants as necessary. This summary includes the essential function of the position; there may be other job-related instructions as requested by the supervisors and other duties as assigned all requiring exemplary attention to detail and core customer service skills.
What you will do
Check specimen I.D. for match with requisition
Assign correct accession # to specimens logged into Histology
Select the correct processing schedule for each processing run. Incorporating appropriate delay programs for weekend and holiday operations.
Follow proper protocol in changing the reagents and wax on the tissue processors.
Selected and sequenced the chemical solutions required to perform the H&E stain. Performed appropriate solution preparation and maintenance of these solutions to insure consistent staining results
Set up and monitor any automated slide stainer to insure maximum slide throughput
Process non-gyn specimens
Always maintain the work area for frozen sections and set-up to minimize specimen prep time and the cryostat was always maintained in a “ready” status.
Assist pathologist and associated staff with FNA process
Education Qualifications
High School Diploma Required
Experience Qualifications
Previous experience as a histology assistant Preferred
Lab Informatics System or EMR experience Preferred
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated excellence in core value customer service skills required
Strong PC skills required
Precise attention to details and clerical accuracy required
Positive criminal and motor vehicle background checks results indicate a strong level of community responsibility required.
