Description
The Histology Technologist performs laboratory procedures according to established and approved protocols. Functions under the technical supervision of the Pathologist. Assists in the preparation of frozen section slides, fine needle aspirations, needle biopsies, and the gross examination of tissue specimens. Prepares microscopic slides of tissues and cytology specimens for review and diagnosis by the Pathologist. Performs all routine, histo-chemical and immune-cytochemical staining of tissue slides in accordance with standard procedures. Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis. Recognizes unexpected results and instrument malfunction and takes appropriate action. Provides laboratory information to authorized sources.

Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis. Recognizes unexpected results and instrument malfunction and takes appropriate action. Responsibilities:
1. Performs routine Histology procedures necessary to prepare slides for examination by Pathologists, including but not limited to embedding, cutting, mounting, and staining.
2. Assists or performs frozen section, touch preps and gross pathology examinations as needed.
3. Helps in the evaluation of new procedures as required.
4. Performs computer accessioning and proper specimen labeling, ensuring specimen integrity.
5. Disposes of specimens properly.
6. Files blocks and slides appropriately.
7. May instruct others in the procedures and methods used in the department and checks for understanding.
8. Participates in activities to prepare the section for inspection by regulatory agencies
9. Performs routine maintenance on equipment in the department. Alerts supervisor to items needing repair and removes from service.
10. Maintains supplies at par levels.
11. Operates HIS and LIS technology proficiently.
12. Keeps lead or supervisor informed of any problems, concerns or issues.
13. Maintains a safe environment for self and teammates. Applies knowledge of the principles of universal precautions, routinely and consistently makes use of these principles. Also knowledgeable of appropriate use of personal protective equipment and infection control barriers and devices.
14. Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.
15. Actively participates in staff meetings.
16. Participates in quality/performance improvement activities.
17. Communicates effectively and appropriately with teammates and supervisor to assure the quality and integrity of the service. Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, establishes high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, remains calm under pressure, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.

High school diploma required.
Licensure/Certification
Registration as a Histologic Technologist, HT (ASCP) preferred.
Experience
At least one year in the field of Histology under the supervision of a Pathologist preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of the materials, procedures and instrumentation used in histology.
• Good problem-solving skills.
• Ability to collaborate well with others.
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
• Proficient with LIS, HIS and MS Office with the ability to learn new software rapidly.
• Able to stand on hard surfaces for significant portion of shift.
Valid NC Driver’s License: No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
