Work Shift

Shift:

  • PRN
  • Travel required to assist with gaps in X‑ray coverage across Adult Orthopedic practices

Job Summary:

  • Assists with providing safe, age‑appropriate care to the patient by performing all radiologic exams provided by the department according to department procedures.
  • Has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study.
  • Responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the utilization of equipment for the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases.
  • Able to independently perform job functions.
  • Sets up the equipment to provide imaging service and positions the patient for the procedure.
  • Must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs.
  • Must be dependable, accountable and cooperative.
  • Works with students during their clinical rotation.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Patient Care

  • Obtains complete clinical history, gathers examination data and assesses for contraindicating conditions.
  • Follows established procedures for the administration of contrast media so that no patient condition deteriorates and no pain occurs due to error or poor technique (if applicable).
  • Ensures that all studies have proper patient identification and right/left markers appropriately placed.
  • Reviews radiographic images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients.
  • Responds to emergency situations and restocks crash cart and maintains life‑support equipment (if applicable).
  • Assists other technologists in all modalities when needed (if applicable).
  • Observes patient condition and evaluates when physician intervention is necessary so that no patient condition deteriorates.
  • Verifies two unique patient identifiers and correct clinical order prior to performing a procedure per policy.
  • Ensures patient privacy and comfort is accommodated.
  • Demonstrates competence in applying appropriate procedures, equipment, supplies and techniques based on patient age.
  • Organizes schedule, time and priorities to ensure timely completion of required activities.
  • Uses critical thinking skills.
  • Asks clarifying questions.
  • Seeks clarification on ambiguous orders.
  • Understands, demonstrates and documents pre‑procedural verification and Time‑Out when appropriate (if applicable).
  • Demonstrates and understands pre‑ and post‑procedural care.
  • Preps the patient for the procedure.
  • Demonstrates and understands sterile technique (if applicable).
  • Maintains competency with venipuncture where applicable.

Equipment

  • Demonstrates the ability to adjust technique to ensure the lowest possible dose of ionizing radiation while maintaining image quality.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or service provider to ensure timely correction.
  • Cleans, disinfects and maintains equipment in accordance with infection control policy and department schedule.
  • Ability to operate all aspects of the system.
  • Ability to safely and competently operate all radiographic equipment, ensuring equipment is not abused and is left in good working order.

Education and Communication

  • Patiently and clearly explains exam purpose and nature to patient prior to procedure using AIDET to minimize anxiety and facilitate cooperation.
  • Ensures patient questions, concerns or contraindications are addressed; notifies physician when necessary prior to procedure.
  • Participates in the orientation and training of departmental employees.
  • Provides patients with preparatory instruction and explanation of procedures.
  • Required documentation is concise, legible and precise.
  • Reads email each scheduled workday and follows through with assignments.
  • Completes mandatory departmental and hospital‑wide education without prompting.

Quality Control

  • Consistently produces high‑quality images, including proper collimation, shielding, technique selection, penetration and positioning.
  • Ensures equipment is fully operational prior to each use by checking calibration and deficiencies.
  • Sends all studies to PACS; prints CDs as necessary. Ensures exams are complete in RIS, oriented, marked, labeled and accurately noted.
  • Prints and scans after‑hours teleradiography studies into PACS (if applicable).
  • Checks for prior exams and ensures they are loaded and properly labeled prior to sending to PACS.

Operations

  • Restocks linens and supplies and maintains Diagnostic Imaging Services in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Transports patients, positions patients and assists them on/off the procedure table.
  • Performs patient charging activities on the day service is rendered.
  • Applies shielding, supportive and immobilization devices and equipment.
  • Willingly shares knowledge and assists coworkers as needed and when time allows.
  • Performs clerical and support duties as required to ensure continuity and quality of services.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of responsibilities and promptly reports problems or potential concerns.
  • Maintains an individual productivity rate equal to coworkers.
  • Maintains Joint Commission and other regulatory standards.
  • Ability to transfer/retrieve images on the PACS system.
  • Takes call when necessary.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education:

  • Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

(All required upon hire unless otherwise stated)

  • ARRT Radiography
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or BLS Instructor

Required Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as ARRT in an acute care or ambulatory setting — Required

Required Minimum Skills:

  • Must exhibit excellent communication skills because this position requires frequent verbal and written communication with physicians, patients, visitors, departmental staff and nursing staff.
  • Must be able to explain or give directions to maintain goodwill and obtain cooperation.
  • Must function independently and under pressure while still participating actively in a team environment.
  • Must consistently demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
  • Must perform effectively in a stressful, fast‑paced environment.
  • Must be able to prioritize appropriately.
  • Must be detail‑oriented and able to multitask effectively.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with patients, families, coworkers, volunteers and physicians.
  • Must function independently yet productively as a cooperative team member.
  • Must be compliant and willing to follow all hospital policies as well as established practices, protocols and procedures for the position and department.
  • Competent in all aspects of Diagnostic Radiology, patient positioning, exposure factors and radiation protection.
  • Must understand anatomy and pathology and how they affect the quality of a procedure.
