Job Summary

  • Must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs.

  • Has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study.
  • Responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the utilization of equipment for diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases.
  • Able to independently perform job functions.
  • Sets up the equipment to provide imaging service and positions patient for the procedure.
  • Must maintain minimum FDA/MQSA requirements for continuing education, experience and equipment.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Patient Care

  • Obtains complete clinical history, gathers examination data and assesses for contraindicating conditions.
  • Ensures all studies have proper patient identification and correct right/left marker usage.
  • Reviews radiographic images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Uses critical thinking skills.
  • Seeks clarification on ambiguous orders.
  • Assists other technologists in all modalities when needed.
  • Observes patient condition and evaluates situations requiring physician intervention to prevent deterioration.
  • Verifies two unique patient identifiers per policy and confirms proper clinician order prior to performing procedure.
  • Ensures patient privacy and comfort.
  • Demonstrates competence in selecting procedures, equipment, supplies and techniques based on patient age.
  • Understands, demonstrates and documents Pre‑Procedure Verification and Time‑Out when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates and understands pre‑ and post‑procedural care when applicable.
  • Demonstrates and understands sterile technique when applicable.
  • Organizes schedule, time and priorities to complete required activities within designated timeframes.
  • Follows physician instructions when assisting with procedures and exams.
  • Practices RBAC (Read Back and Confirm) when taking verbal orders.

Equipment

  • Demonstrates ability to adjust technique so the patient receives the best possible study while maintaining image quality.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or service provider for timely correction.
  • Cleans, disinfects and maintains equipment per infection control policy and department cleaning schedule.
  • Operates all radiographic equipment safely and competently; ensures equipment is not abused and is in good working order.

Education and Communication

  • Clearly explains purpose and nature of exam using AIDET to reduce anxiety and promote cooperation.
  • Ensures patient questions, concerns or contraindications are addressed before starting the procedure; notifies physician when necessary.
  • Participates in orientation and training of departmental employees.
  • Provides patients with preparatory instructions and detailed explanations of procedures.
  • Required documentation is concise, legible and precise.
  • Reads email daily and follows through on assignments.
  • Completes all departmental and hospital‑wide mandatory education without prompting.

Quality Control

  • Produces acceptable images with a first‑time acceptance rate of 95%.
  • Ensures equipment is fully operational prior to each use by checking calibration and operating deficiencies.
  • Completes all studies in RIS; ensures images are properly oriented, marked, labeled and noted before sending to PACS; prints CDs as needed.
  • Digitizes comparative studies when necessary; completes preliminary sheet in full when applicable.
  • Maintains all required documentation to meet ACR Accreditation standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in performing and documenting ACR/MQSA QC tests including Phantom, Visual Checklist, Repeat Analysis, Compression Pressure, Compression Thickness, Flat Field Test, Calibration and DICOM Printer Test.

Operations

  • Restocks linens and supplies and maintains the Mammography Department in clean and orderly condition.
  • Transports and positions patients and assists them on and off the exam table.
  • Performs patient charging activities on the day service is rendered.
  • Applies shielding as appropriate.
  • Prepares and maintains patient follow‑up data.
  • Willingly shares knowledge and assistance upon request and as time is available.
  • Performs clerical and support duties to ensure continuity and quality of services.
  • Keeps supervisor informed and promptly reports potential problems.
  • Maintains productivity equal to other coworkers.
  • Familiar with Mammography Tracking System.
  • Maintains Joint Commission and other regulatory agency standards.
  • Familiar with FDA/MQSA EQUIP program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education

  • Graduate of AMA‑approved School of Radiology Technology, currently ARRT registered.
  • Graduate of AMA‑approved School of Radiology Technology, currently ARRT registered. (duplicate included exactly as written)

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)

(All required upon hire unless otherwise stated)

  • ARRT‑M Mammography
  • ARRT‑R Radiography
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or BLS‑Instructor

Additional License(s) and Certification(s)

  • None

Required Minimum Experience

  • Minimum 1 year experience as a Rad Tech — Required
  • Less than 1 year experience in Mammography — Preferred
