Job Description:

Phlebotomy Student learns how to accurately and compassionately collect patient specimens for laboratory diagnostic testing while working in a professional medical environment. Caregivers in this role will become skilled at performing venipuncture, capillary sticks and other basic phlebotomy skills before advancing into a Phlebotomist I position within Intermountain Health. Phlebotomist Student will attend a four-week course, including two weeks in the classroom and two-week externship. Students will be taught specific care and interventions for all patient populations and will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the appropriate care for all age groups during their externship. Before completing the certification course, students will successfully complete a minimum of 125 venipunctures, 10 capillary sticks, and four blood culture collections.

Intermountain Phlebotomists function as part of a dynamic and engaging team in a professional setting with a workload that ranges from fast-paced hospital settings and high-volume clinics to low volume clinics or doctor office settings. These caregivers interact directly with patients and other caregivers to provide extraordinary care and quality outcomes for patients.

All phlebotomy caregivers adhere to patient identification and specimen labeling policies and procedures with 100% accuracy. Caregivers completing this phlebotomy course will be at the forefront of patient care and enforce the standards for laboratory compliance and safety regulations.

The Phlebotomist Student will learn to perform specimen collection using many different techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections. Performance of these tasks are taught and completed while wearing appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment). Due to the nature of healthcare, some specimen collection may require operating under various levels of PPE and providing care for patients in isolation.

This position requires organizational skills, as well as the ability to navigate multiple computer systems, work well as a member of a team, and maintain a clean and standardized work environment. Job Description

The Phlebotomy student will learn the performance of venipuncture and capillary puncture along with other basic skills used to collect laboratory specimens for analysis and to aid in the treatment and care of patients in a confidential, productive, and professional manner.

Intermountain Healthcare has created an employment opportunity for selected individuals to be trained as Phlebotomists. Intermountain Healthcare will cover the cost of tuition and training materials, and pay a salary of $17.14/hr. while students are in training. Course time will count toward benefits eligibility. (Current Benefits Eligible Intermountain Employees will retain their benefits coverage).

How long is the course?

The training course is four weeks. During the first two weeks, students will spend time in classroom and at sites doing observation and hands-on training. During the final two weeks, students will complete a clinical externship at various Intermountain Healthcare hospitals. At the end of the first week of the course, students will be individually evaluated to see if their performance warrants the completion of the course.

What are the hours for the course?

Participation in the course requires full-time commitment (40 hours per week), as students, to attend all classes and on-site training and observations, during the training program. Schedules will be set before the course begins and do not allow for flexibility or part-time participation. Students will not be permitted to miss any classes or externship hours.

What happens when the course is over?

After completing the Intermountain Healthcare Phlebotomy Training course, students will be required to interview for open Phlebotomist positions within the Intermountain Laboratory Services and all outreach clinics associate within Laboratory Services. Available shifts may be full-time or part-time, must be willing to work flexible hours, and may include early morning, day, afternoon, night and/or weekend shifts. Specific shifts cannot be guaranteed at the start of the course, but are dependent upon job availability at the time the course if completed.

If I complete the program, what is my work obligation?

After completion of the training program, your commitment is to work as a Phlebotomist for at least 24 hours per week in an Intermountain Laboratory Services facility and complete one-year of work. If this requirement is not met, students will be required to reimburse Intermountain Healthcare $1500.00 to cover the cost of tuition and materials.

Essential Functions

  • The Phlebotomist I perform specimen collection using many different techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections. These caregivers collect specimens from patients of various acuities, such as Outpatient, Emergency Department, and Inpatient – including newborns, patients in intensive care, and all other areas of the hospital. They are at the forefront of patient care and adhere to and enforce the standards for laboratory compliance and safety regulations.
  • Adherence to personal protective requirements in inpatient and/or outpatient settings, including but not limited to gowns, gloves, lab coats, face shields, and masks.
  • Intermountain Caregivers in this role will communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members and demonstrate empathy during every interaction. They will also have opportunities for growth, developing skills such as:

  • Participation in special projects
  • Other laboratory responsibilities as required by site or assigned by the team or department leader.

  • Ability to take on-call shifts and participate in holiday rotations, according to department or facility needs.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent in compliance with CLIA regulation, Preferred.
  • Must be flexible to work in other facilities, as needed.
  • BLS - Required

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
