The EMT-Basic is an entry-level basic life support professional who is capable of functioning independently at the basic life support level but is still focused on gaining knowledge and experience.

What You’ll Do:

  • Assess and treat ill and injured patients in accordance with UVA Health and regional EMS protocols.
  • Maintain safety as a top priority throughout all aspects of care and transport.
  • Identify opportunities for improved care, contributing to continuous quality improvement.
  • Collaborate effectively with peers, patients, and healthcare teams while upholding professional standards.
  • Ensure vehicles are cleaned, stocked, and ready after each transport or event.
  • Stay current with required certifications, continuing education, and departmental in-services.
  • Represent UVA Health’s legacy of excellence, built on decades of trusted emergency medical service through the Pegasus and Medic V programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent required.
  • Experience: None
  • Licensure/Certifications: Certified as a Health Emergency Medical Technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia required. Valid Driver’s License (VADL) and at least 2 years of driving experience required.  American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required. EVOC certification and be a released driver to transport patients required within 90 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • Experience: No previous advanced life support experience required. At least one year of relevant BLS experience preferred.
  • Licensure/Certifications: Virginia Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician- Advanced or EMT-Enhanced preferred. Successful completion of Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) Level II or higher prior to start date or within 90 days of employment. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.

Physical Demands – Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling, climbing (ladder, steps), and driving. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull > 100lbs. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, vibrations, humidity, cold, heat, noise, outdoor climate, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

Onboarding Requirements

Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.

The starting base rate for this role is $19.00 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
