About the Department

Located at 1725 Discovery Dr., Suite 200, Charlottesville, VA 22911, UVA Specialty Pharmacy supports patients with complex and chronic conditions including cancer, HIV, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, and transplant-related therapies.

What You’ll Do

As a Specialty Operations Pharmacist, you will:

  • Verify & Dispense: Perform clinical verification and ensure accurate labeling, packaging, cold-chain handling, and shipping.
  • Lead Operations: Oversee technicians in filling, compounding (if applicable), inventory, and returns/waste; support scheduling and daily huddles.
  • Resolve Barriers: Troubleshoot insurance issues, address patient questions and concerns, and support pharmacy technicians.
  • Collaborate & Communicate: Work with providers, clinic staff, and patients to provide safe, coordinated, and timely care.
  • Support Patients: Manage refills, monitor adherence, and ensure therapy continuity.
  • Document & Comply: Record interventions in pharmacy systems/EHR; maintain FDA, state board, and accreditation standards.
  • Drive Quality: Participate in audits, accreditation readiness, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor & Develop: Train and guide technicians and new pharmacists; engage in team meetings and culture-building. Participate in personal development and growth opportunities.
  • Stay Current: Maintain continuing education and specialty pharmacy competency.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree required
  • Experience: No experience required
  • Licensure/Certifications: Commonwealth of Virginia State Board of Pharmacy License. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Pharm.D. from an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy
  • Experience: None
  • Licensure/Certifications: Commonwealth of Virginia State Board of Pharmacy License. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.

Physical Demands – Job requires standing and traveling for prolonged periods.  Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20lbs.  May be exposed to chemicals.

Onboarding Requirements

Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.

The starting base rate for this role is $64.37 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
