Event Medicine Specialist I work with a multidisciplinary team of professionals to coordinate the response to illness and injury for event spectators and participants.

As an Event Medicine Specialist, you’ll deliver critical care and rapid response services at some of Virginia’s largest public gatherings, ensuring safety and readiness when it matters most.

What You’ll Do:

  • Deliver direct patient care at the Basic Life Support (BLS) level, following UVA’s Medical Transport Network guidelines and regional EMS protocols.
  • Document patient conditions and treatments accurately while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with peers and event teams to ensure seamless medical coverage and uphold professional standards.
  • Clean, restock, and maintain assigned vehicles after each event or transport to ensure readiness.
  • Prioritize safety in every aspect of care and transportation, reporting hazards promptly to supervisors.
  • Stay current with certifications, continuing education, and departmental in-service requirements.
  • Support UVA’s SEMM program, a nationally recognized model for special event medicine, by providing responsive, high-quality care in fast-paced environments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent.
  • Experience: One year of BLS-level experience as a released attendant-in-charge.
  • Licensure/Certifications: Virginia Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Advanced EMT (AEMT) certification. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Unrestricted Valid Driver’s License (VADL) and at least 2 years of driving experience required. Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) Class II or higher required within 90 days of employment.

Physical Demands – Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling, climbing (ladder, steps), and driving. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull > 100lbs. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, vibrations, humidity, cold, heat, noise, outdoor climate, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

Onboarding Requirements

Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.

The starting base rate for this role is $17.00 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
