Position Summary: The Floater pharmacy technician must have the ability to work all technician shifts at both Georgetown and Waccamaw Hospital including the dispensing and medication reconciliation roles. This position must possess familiarity with all aspects of Pyxis, inventory management, billing/charging, and medication reconciliation. In addition, this technician will work closely with the Pharmacy Automation Specialist, Inventory Analyst, and Billing and Regulatory Compliance technicians to ensure compliance with policy, protocol, and regulations. The technician agrees to support the goals, objectives, and proper function of the department and the hospital in order to provide positive patient outcomes while maintaining patient confidentiality. The technician will comply with the policies, laws, regulations, and standards that govern the practice of pharmacy as well as those of the hospital. The technician will maintain an appropriate level of competency in order to perform the job duties as required by the department, the hospital and any regulatory agencies. SUMMARY OF PRIMARY FUNCTIONS – Attention to detail with high speed efficiency and accuracy. . Proficiency in calculations. Fills medication orders for inpatient/outpatient areas, Compounds, labels, and repackages medications under the supervision of pharmacist. Loads & Refills Pyxis Medstations. Works toward optimal inventory levels-max/min Assists pharmacist in processing controlled substances requisitions and associated documentation and filing required and utilization of Pyxis CII Safe. Completes medication histories and medication reconciliation documentation per protocol Delivers supplies to patient units and ancillary areas as needed. Answers telephones and responds to questions and problems as authorized. Performs clerical and billing duties as assigned. Maintains logs and filing systems Orders medications/supplies from suppliers and checks orders on receiving. Removes expired or soon to expire drugs from inventory and re-orders as necessary. USP 797 Compliant Precepts Pharmacy Tech Students & participates in applied education of Pharmacy Students Attends annual orientation and other in-services as required by pharmacy and TH. Completes and passes periodic competency tests as required by the department, the hospital or regulatory agencies. Maintains continuing education credits as required by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, the Board of Pharmacy, and any other regulatory agencies. Education: High School graduate or equivalent with strong math/algebra, reading comprehension, typing and computer entry skills. Good human relations and oral/written communication skills required. Specialized training in an accredited pharmacy Technician program is preferred. Experience/Qualifications: Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician with 3 years of hospital experience. State Certified with LLR/SC Board of Pharmacy preferred. Must maintain an appropriate level of competency in order to perform the job duties as required by the department, the hospital and any regulatory agencies. Strong knowledge of medications required. Special Skills: Ability to work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staffs. Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule. Ability to work all of the technician shifts at both hospitals, including the dispensing roles and medication reconciliation roles. Ability to set priorities, makes decisions, and responds quickly to emergency requests. Ability to assist the pharmacist in meeting the pharmaceutical needs of neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. Familiarity with Pyxis, Pyxis operations, Inventory management, and Billing/Compliance issues. Must recognize most pharmaceuticals with basic understanding of dosage, dosage forms, and routes of administration Ability to prioritize and balance workload Ability to locate and evaluate pharmaceutical information Excellent computer skills including Meditech, Outlook, Truven, internet Excellent communication and customer service skills Reviews and updates Tidelands Medication reconciliation policy as needed. Hours: Minimum of 40 hours per week based on the needs of the department; occasionally subjected to irregular hours or days. This position is a floater position and schedule will be based on PTO and other needs of the departments. This position will work at both hospitals. Occupational Hazard: Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapy, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions). Potential for exposure to sharp instruments. Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used. (Potential for exposure to infectious patients or materials is negligible.) Generally this person will work in a well-lighted, well-ventilated, heated, air conditioned environment under secure working conditions.
