Stand With Caregivers: Building Workplaces That Protect Mental Health

Every May since 1949, we have been celebrating the “MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH”. We celebrate this event to provide the chance to stand with our community and our Healthcare workers and help them realize that they are not alone. With this year’s theme, “MORE GOOD DAYS TOGETHER”, let us help each and everyone of us discover what a good day looks like in our lives. We must help each and everyone of us learn to communicate with our fellow workmates to vent out problems in our workplace and keep our mental health stable and firm. This is also a good way of helping those who are mentally unstable to find the right support for them if ever they need it.

There are a lot of reasons for someone to be affected with mental health issues, and we need to learn to spot them. Mental health is very critical in the Healthcare industry because we need to ensure high-quality care, reduce staff burnout, and lower turnover rate. Below are some reasons why mental health is important in our industry.

  • Impact on Patient Care- having good mental health keeps our health workers in their right state of mind for them to provide better compassion, empathy, and have more accurate judgment.

  • Prevents Burnout and Turnovers- with good mental health, turnover may be reduced preventing the high cost of staff vacancies

  • Improves Safety and Performance- having good mental health helps in having high standards of patient safety and care.

  • Staff Well-being and Retention- helping our workers have better mental health gives them more empathy and makes them more productive In their work.

  • Prevents Long-term Harm- addressing our workers anxiety, depression, and fatigue ensures longevity in the workplace.

Ensuring that our workplace has policies and procedures helping our employees have good mental health is a must. We need to provide resources for our employees that they may have counseling, therapy, and stress management workshops and help them feel the company’s support and concern for their well-being. Promoting an environment that encourages them to communicate about their mental health to reduce their stigma. Being said, Mental health is one of the most important thing for our health workers so that we can build a sustainable and effective care industry.
