Where you work matters! Swedish Medical Center is looking for a Patient Services Coordinator II (1.0 FTE, Days) to work in Bariatric Surgery and Non-Surgical Weight Loss Services at Swedish First Hill in Seattle, WA.

This position performs a variety of front office clerical and support tasks in an outpatient setting. Responsible for greeting patients, new referral intake, appointment and surgical scheduling, insurance authorization, collecting insurance co-payments, billing, abstracting, and clinic medical record management. May assist in coordination of research activities for accreditation purposes.

In this position you will:

  • Creates a safe and comfortable environment. Demonstrates sensitive and caring behavior to severely obese individuals. Ensures effective and efficient work process in caring for patients
  • Answers the telephone by identifying the department and own name. Records and relays messages in a courteous and helpful manner. Provides a prompt, reliable response, ensuring that messages reach providers. Checks voice mail for messages. Orients patients and families to the clinic and provides clear and relevant information. Available to patients and families if there are questions or concerns.
  • Receives and completes all information required for new patient referral. Verifies required information, e.g. medical information, verification of Insurance information, referring MD letter for service when requested.
  • Schedules patients for office visits and surgical procedures. Coordinates scheduling with other clinical staff and departments for various procedures or physician and therapy evaluations related to Bariatric surgery preparation. Prepares copy of the patient/practitioner schedule daily. Contacts patients to remind them of their appointments or change in appointment
  • Contacts payer for authorization/verification for requested visits, treatments, procedures and/or Bariatric benefits. Documents and notifies practitioner and patient if authorization for service is denied.
  • Inputs diagnostic codes and physician data for each new account. Inputs patient data for reporting per specifications related to Bariatric research. Updates account changes.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • One (1) year related experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Basic data entry skills
  • Must understand coding and medical terminology related to co-morbid conditions that are commonly associated with obese patients.

Preferred qualification for this position include:

  • Completion of health care assistant program with an accredited school.
  • Experience with hospital and/or clinic based Bariatric program.
  • Retail experience a plus, but not required for health related products.
