Swedish Medical Center is looking for a Patient Financial Specialist (1.0 FTE, Days) for Anticoagulation and Pharmacotherapy Clinic at Swedish First Hill in Seattle, Washington.

This position is in constant contact with patients, physicians, clinical support staff, pharmacy, and third party payers. The Patient Financial Specialists are responsible for coordinating all aspects of the patient’s financial roadmap.

In this position you will:

  • Be responsible for insurance and eligibility verifications and assessment of financial requirements of recommended treatments, including prior authorization and appeals. This includes working with insurance company medical directors and case managers to appeal denials and communicate the appeal process to internal providers and patients.
  • Review with the patient on insurance benefits, co-payments, and out of pocket expenses.
  • Act as a professional liaison with patients, families, other departments, and third party payers.

This individual performs responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner. This individual will partner in the orientation and training of new staff. These responsibilities are often carried out simultaneously with frequent interruption. In addition, this job may include other special project assignments as directed. All duties accomplished with an exceptional customer service approach (AIDET Level II) to optimize the Pharmacotherapy Clinic patient’s experience.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Associate's Degree in Accounting, business administration, or related field. Or equivalent educ/experience
  • Two (2) years prior background in a healthcare setting of billing, financial counseling, or financial advocacy with proficiency in medical terminology
  • Must have knowledge of the insurance industry, reimbursement, and pre-certification.
  • Knowledge of Medicare-Part B (CMS) policy on billing, reimbursement and other third party reimbursement is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state regulations, insurance policies and procedures.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner.
  • Must have the ability to empathize with patients and their families and maintain difficult conversations as needed with regards to financial matters.
  • Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people at various levels within and outside of the Swedish Health System (SHS) and the Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI).
  • Must have excellent analytical and reconciliation skills.
  • Possesses competency in computer skills including electronic medical record (EMR), patient data entry, word processing, and E-mail systems.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and organization to prioritize and complete multiple tasks accurately.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, such as FAX machines, copier, and telephone systems.
