Job Description

We are looking for a Surgical Technician for the Operating Room at St. Joseph Hospital Orange.

Location: Orange, CA

Work Schedule: Full time - 80 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 8-hour, Days

Job Summary:

Surgical Technologists are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. Surgical technologists work under the supervision of the surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. Ensures that the operating room environment is safe, the equipment functions properly, and the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Essential Functions:

  • Handles instrument, supplies and equipment necessary for the surgical procedure.
  • Directs other caregivers as a means to help manage operational issues.
  • Understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the need of the surgeon.
  • Identifies and recommends opportunities for more efficient and cost effective use of material resources.
  • Ensures quality patient care during operative procedure and vigilance for maintenance of sterile field.
  • Assists with positioning of patient using appropriate equipment.
  • Assists in circulating by obtaining additional instruments and supplies necessary during surgical procedures.
  • Acts as preceptor to develop, assess and validate clinical competencies of team members. Seeks opportunities to teach, coach and mentor others.
  • Assists with transfer of patients on and off the operating room table.
  • Participates with improvement in customer satisfaction.
  • Properly cares for specimens and ensures safe handling and disposition.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of guidelines, policies and safety requirements as determined by relevant regulatory compliance organizations. Follows the Environment of Care and Joint Commission Guidelines.
  • Participates in department Quality Improvement, development and compliance of departmental policies and procedures as it relates to performance of duties.
  • Follows procedure for labeling and identify medication and or solutions on and off sterile field in perioperative and all other procedural settings. Compliance to all medication safety.


  • Expertise in theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies.
  • Knowledge of OR equipment / instrumentation.
  • Ability to operate business machines and able to handle heavy equipment (push / pull).

Minimum Position Requirements:


  • H.S. Diploma or GED
  • Coursework/Training - Graduate of accredited Surgical Technology Program.
  • Coursework/Training - Obtains at least 6 CEUs per year.

Licenses/Certifications: Current Basic Life Support certification from American Heart Association.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience: 1 year operating room experience.
