Job Description

We are looking for a PET Clinician for the Psychiatric Emergency Triage Department at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.

Location: Mission Viejo, CA

Work Schedule: On Call/ Per Diem

Shift: 12-hour, Days (Variable)

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the executive director and designee manager, the incumbent will be part of a modified PET (psychiatric emergency) team for both campuses. Provides behavioral health evaluations and coordinates the discharge for psychiatric and chemical dependency outpatient and inpatient referrals and/or transfers in conjunction with the physician and healthcare team. Will be registered as designated by the Orange County Health Care Agency, Department of Mental Health to evaluate and place individuals on 5150 holds demonstrating competency through training and bi-annual re-designation. May include on-call PET coverage.

Essential Functions:

  • Assessment:
  • Interviews referred patients for behavioral health or chemical dependency assessment.
  • Uses knowledge of DSM-IV, mental health laws, age-specific considerations; gathers healthcare team assessments, pertinent collateral contact information and history to incorporate in assessment.
  • Applies sound clinical skills and good judgment in assessment for patient safety.
  • Re-assesses patients as necessary if medical clearance changes.
  • Collaborates with the healthcare team and communicates assessment through prompt follow-up.
  • Consults and refers to psychiatrist as situation warrants.
  • Intervention:
  • Complies with 5150 requirements for assessment, written documents, tracking and accurate/complete documentation.
  • Educates patient and family on psychiatric and chemical dependency resources.
  • Makes recommendations to staff for behavioral management of patient within scope of clinician practice.
  • Addresses difficult, crisis situations using good clinical, crisis intervention and management of assaultive behavior skills and knowledge.
  • Patient Flow and Discharge:
  • Coordinates discharge referrals for psychiatric and chemical dependency patients assessed by providing appropriate community resources, outpatient treatment or inpatient admission.
  • For inpatient transfers, obtains necessary authorizations, transfer clearance and approval from receiving hospital; arranges transportation and transfer paperwork to ensure safe transfer and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Works with healthcare team to achieve a safe, an appropriate placement and timely discharge. Sets expectations for the patient/family on admission and continuously with regard to expected length of stay.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of managed care and unfunded resources to arrange follow-up needs.
  • Documentation:
  • Enters prompt chart documentation which reflects accurate clinical picture of patient with recommendations.
  • Assures that department and regulatory documentation is timely, complete and accurate.
  • Collaboration and Education:
  • Demonstrates ability to positively and collaboratively work with multi-disciplinary team.
  • Educates healthcare team on involuntary hold laws and requirements.
  • Maintains and updates resource knowledge regularly and shares information with staff.
  • Accountability:
  • Evaluates referrals for prioritizing.
  • Identifies opportunities for performance improvement and offers possible enhancements.
  • Maintains knowledge of behavioral health policies and effectively communicates to healthcare team.
  • Responds to referrals in a timely manner and according to established timelines when on call.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of DSM-IV and psychiatric/chemical dependency treatment and community resources.
  • Ability to make an accurate preliminary psychiatric assessment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Requires standing and walking to various areas of the hospital 20 - 25% of time and driving between campuses.
  • Ability to deal with multiple needs and patients/families in crisis.
  • Ability to problem-solve, analyze situations, think critically and give constructive feedback.
  • Basic computer skills for hospital information management systems.
  • Ability to remove and replace medical records in chart racks.
  • Ability to work effectively with healthcare team.
  • Effective interviewing skills.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Education: Master's Degree in Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology or equivalent education/experience

Experience: 1 year experience providing crisis intervention or patient intake/ evaluation services across a continuum of care within an acute care or free standing facility.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current LCSW, LMFT, RN, or licensed psychologist.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider Heartsaver card.
  • Current designation to write 5150 holds at time of hire or within 30 days from date of hire.
  • Current California driver’s license.
