Job Description

We are looking for a Speech/Language Pathologist for the Speech Therapy Department at St. Joseph Hospital Orange.

Location Orange, CA

Work Schedule: On Call/ Per Diem

Shift: 8-hour, Days (Primarily Weekends)

Job Summary:

Provides direct patient care services that includes evaluation, assessment, treatment planning based on the functional needs of the patient, program development, evaluation of the response to care and readjustment of the treatment plan as required. Plans and provides patient, family, peer and community education and coordinates services with other health care professionals including interaction with physicians responsible for the care of the patient.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides patient care including assessment, treatment planning, evaluation of the response to care and readjustment of the treatment plan as required.
  • Plans and provides patient, family, peer and community education.
  • Prepares the patient for transfer to another level of care or discharge from therapy.
  • Timely documents patient care and prepares special reports for insurance companies.
  • Analyzes the patient record and determines which portions of the record are applicable to the services being provided.
  • Organizes time schedule to assure that each patient gets the maximum time available and that persons being supervised are given sufficient time for communication and instruction.
  • Writes legible written notes in the patient record. Periodically reviews, compiles and presents information in a written report to physicians, insurance companies and others.
  • Clearly communicates with patients and other healthcare workers.
  • Collect data from various sources, analyzes data, solicits information from patients and family to determine their needs and expectations and consults with appropriate facility and community resources.
  • Determine a treatment plan which is appropriate based on the information available and determines the tasks to be performed to complete the plan and communicate the plan as required.
  • Supervises performance of patient related tasks of assistants, aides, interns, students and volunteers.
  • Bills using the appropriate billing computer, or manual systems as required.

Skills:

  • Competent in Sign Language.
  • Computer literacy in Windows applications.
  • Knowledge of applicable statutes of the Ethical Code of the American Speech & Hearing Association.
  • Ability to lead and delegate responsibilities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Organization and prioritization skills.
  • Bilingual (English, Spanish, Vietnamese).

Minimum Position Requirements:

Education: Education to commensurate with the requirements needed to successfully pursue a license as a Speech Pathologist in the State of California.

Experience: 4 months experience in providing direct patient care. Internships are acceptable to meet this requirement.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current and valid license as a speech-language pathologist issued by the State of California, or written permission granted by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California, which allows the applicant to perform as a speech-language pathologist.
  • A certificate of completion of training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Class C) which has been completed within the last 2 years (the Hospital may require a 1 year certification).

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Education:

  • Coursework/Training - Training in Dysphagia Evaluation procedures required to perform a Modified Barium Swallow Study.
  • Graduate of an ASHA accredited school of speech-language pathology and audiology.

Experience:

  • 6 months experience in any capacity in an acute care hospital.
  • 6 months experience as an employee in a speech therapy environment.
