Location: Eureka, CA

Work Schedule: Part time - 48 Biweekly hours

Shift: 12 hour, Days

Job Summary:

The EKG Technician is a member of the patient care team who performs a variety of tasks and activities to meet patient and department needs consistent with the scope of practice for an unlicensed practitioner. The EKG Technician must manage multiple demands on his/her time to support the activity of stat and routine EKG and halter monitor orders.

Essential Functions:

  • 12 Lead EKG:

• Completes EKG Competency.

• Prepares the patient for EKG test, including undressing the patient and securing the patient’s belongings in a labeled bag when appropriate.

• Demonstrates correct placement of EKG leads when preforming 12 lead EKG’s.

• Demonstrates ability to prepare chest for electrode placement.

• Demonstrates the ability to recognize life threatening vital signs and symptoms, and communicates observations to the nursing/RT/physicians in a timely manner.

  • Halter Monitoring:

• Verifies order prior to applying halter monitor.

• Prepares the patient for halter monitoring that include 24, 48, 14, and 30 day event and loop monitoring.

• Demonstrates the correct application of halter monitor leads/patches.

• Confirms appointments with patients, doctors, and pertinent departments as needed.

• Conducts daily review of halter monitoring reports and communicates with Cardiologist assigned to read.

• Notifies Lead RCP and/or Director when halter reports are not read by Cardiologist within 48-72 hours.

  • Responds to and assists in emergency situations, e.g. responds to code blue/white/code trauma, etc.
  • Applies equipment for initiating cardiac, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring and pulse oximetry as directed.
  • Demonstrates documentation of vital signs in patient care areas when appropriate.
  • Schedules Out-Patient testing in Meditech.
  • Accesses Meditech for order entry and other clerical duties as requested.
  • Assists with answering phones using phone etiquette and communicates requests appropriately to nursing and respiratory therapist in a timely manner, i.e. critical values, visitor request.
  • Performs clerical duties per unit routine and as directed by Respiratory Therapy Lead/Manager/Director.
  • Assists with cardiopulmonary supply ordering and stocks cardiopulmonary store room that meets environmental standards for safety.
  • Safeguards the privacy of the patient and appropriately handles confidential patient information.
  • Maintains standard precautions at all times.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of safe and proper dilution, use, storage, and destruction of chemicals or hazardous materials.
  • Demonstrates safe patient transportation.
  • Demonstrates safe use of oxygen, flowmeter masks, and cannulas.


  • Principles of body mechanics.
  • Ability to write legibly and spell correctly.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and basic anatomy.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to learn tasks through on the job training.

Minimum Position Qualifications:

Education : H.S. Diploma or GED

Experience : 2 years of experience in a health care setting performing 12 lead EKG and halter monitoring.


  • BLS-HCP.
  • Basic EKG arrhythmia.
  • CPR.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

License/Certification : Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant
