Summary:
The Respiratory Care Assistant delivers cardiopulmonary care, as directed by the provider, to patients of Wayne UNC Health Care in an effective and efficient manner. Works under the direct supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner (RCP).
Responsibilities:
1. Assists in transporting and setting up equipment and administers therapies as ordered by the physician, within 10 minutes on all STAT orders, and performs scheduled treatments for routine orders in a timely manner.
2. Provides therapy and procedures per department standards including:
• Oxygen Supply Systems
• Equipment Processing- Cleans and prepares equipment for sterilization and reports damaged or broken equipment. Checks dirty supply rooms daily.
• Manual Resuscitation
• Oxygen Administration
• Humidity and Aerosol Therapy
• Small Volume Nebulizer Therapy
• MDI Administration
• Incentive Spirometry
• Non-invasive Mechanical Airway Clearance Therapy
• Chest Physiotherapy with suctioning
• Arterial Puncture
3. Responsible for assisting in setup, operation, and maintenance of mechanical ventilation for adults, pediatrics and neonates.
4. Performs EKG and Holter monitor procedures per department standards.
5. Documents and records specific information on patient’s medical record.
6. Participates in shift and patient reporting.
7. Reviews patient’s record to ensure against contraindication to treatment prescribed and properly identifies patient. Reports any complications encountered when treating patients to supervisor/lead therapist.
8. Complies with all North Carolina Respiratory Care Board requirements or regulations to maintain employment as a Respiratory Care Assistant.
9. Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, establishes high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, remains calm under pressure, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.
10. Demonstrates appropriate interaction with and provides recommended care and services to all patient. Exhibits knowledge and basic understanding regarding the needs of neonatal, adolescent, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients, and the cultural needs of all patients.
11. Applies knowledge of principles of standard precautions. Routinely uses PPE to avoid risk of exposure to self and others.

Education
Enrolled in a recognized Respiratory Care Programs that has been approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.
Licensure/Certification
Must be registered and verified with the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board before providing Respiratory Care procedures as a Respiratory Care Assistant.
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) which includes Adult, Child and Infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), the Heimlich Maneuver, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) use by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross or the American Safety and Health Institute.
Experience
Completion of first year of Respiratory Care Associate Degree Program.
Demonstrated competencies verified by the educational institution for the procedures defined in the revised declaratory ruling by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Considerable knowledge of the procedures, materials and equipment used in Respiratory Care.
• Knowledge of the care and use of tools, equipment and machinery used in Respiratory Care.
• Exhibits knowledge and a basic understanding regarding the needs of neonatal, adolescent, pediatric and geriatric patients and the cultural needs of all patients.
• To remain in good standing with the Board and to continue as a Respiratory Care Assistant, a minimum grade of at least 2.0 in all RCP courses and an overall average of 2.0 must be maintained.
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
• Proficient with MS Office and able to learn new software (e.g. Epic EMR) rapidly.
Valid NC Driver’s License:No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
