Responsibilities

Position Summary: The Catherization Laboratory Specialist, under the direct supervision of a physician or Catherization Laboratory Technologist - RCIS, assists with and/or performs all routine diagnostic and emergent therapeutic angiographic or catheterization procedures. Assures equipment is functioning properly. Produces and evaluates data, information and images used by the physician in the performance of the procedure. Assists team members in all aspects of patient care, monitoring patient’s vital signs, interpreting status information and performing functioning in one or more of the following: monitor, scrub, or circulating technologist. Educates patients, family members and catheterization team. Stocks inventory and all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience: Minimum one (1) year experience in current credentialed discipline (formal educational program clinical hours are considered). Experience with physiological monitoring systems and sterile scrub technique.

Education: High School diploma or GED required and must meet and/or be actively working towards one of the following requirements:

  1. A graduate of a certificate, diploma, associate, or baccalaureate academic program in health science (includes, but not limited to, cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, Paramedic/EMT, or nursing)
    AND
    One year full-time work experience in invasive cardiovascular technology
    AND
    600* cardiac diagnostic/interventional procedures in their career which is defined as work experience and/or clinical experience gained during a formal educational program.

  1. *IMPORTANT: If an individual’s procedures were completed during a formal educational program, then those procedures completed WOULD count toward the minimum of 600 diagnostic/interventional procedures under qualification RCIS235-2013.

  1. A graduate of a NON-programmatically accredited program in invasive cardiovascular technology which has a minimum of one year of specialty training and includes a minimum of 800 clinical hours* in the specialty in which the examination is being requested.

  1. *IMPORTANT: If an individual’s clinical hours were completed after graduation or if the hours are not a requirement for their educational program, then those hours WOULD NOT count toward the 800-hour minimum under qualification RCIS5. All clinical hours must be earned in a setting in which patients are being tested or medically treated.

  1. Applicant must be a graduate of a programmatically accredited program** in invasive cardiovascular technology, be RCIS eligible, and certified within 1 year of date of hire into position.

** An accredited program is accredited by an agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), United States Department of Education (USDOE), or Canadian Medical Association (CMA) that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for cardiovascular technology, diagnostic cardiac sonography, or vascular technology. Typed documentation to support/verify the qualification prerequisites is required and must be provided on official letter head from the supervising medical director and/or program director and must confirm the number of studies performed during employment and/or academic program.

Certification/Licensure:

-Eligible for or certification by the South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association (SCRQSA), application under “invasive specialist required. If not currently certified, must be within 90 days of hire.

-For RN and Allied Health professionals (RRT, RT(R), RVT, CVT, Paramedic/EMT) must have active and in good standing a current SC license and/or ARRT and/or current national registry (as accepted by Tidelands Health) in applicable discipline.

-Regardless of education category above, must be RCIS certified within 1 year of hire (option #3) or within 1 year of completing CCI qualification prerequisite (option #1 and #2).

-American Heart Association Healthcare provider course with Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required to be initially completed with the TH Organizational Development Office within 30 calendar days of hire date (exceptions to obtain certification from a provider other than the TH Organizational Development Office are approved by TH Organizational development on a case by case basis). BLS Recertification is required every two (2) years.

Physical Requirements: Medium Physical Agility (PAT) Rating

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently (activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) required to stand, sit, and walk; occasionally (activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) to use hands, fingers; and frequently to talk or hear. The employee must exert 20 to 35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
