Job Description


Under general supervision, the Sterile Processing Instrument Tech decontaminates, cleans, processes, sterilizes, stores, and distributes reusable medical devices and supplies used in patient care.


  1. Decontaminates and cleans reusable equipment and/or supplies and associated storage units in accordance with department, manufacturer, and OSHA standards.
  2. Assembles, stores, and distributes reusable medical equipment and/or supplies for Rounds assigned areas to ensure equipment and/or supplies and storage units are maintained in a timely manner.
  3. Performs and documents quality control aspects of sterile processing.
  4. Maintains records and documentation of for all aspects of instrument processing and the sterilization process.
  5. Adheres to proper infection control and safety practices. Ensures proper handling of instruments and equipment to prevent damage or loss.
  6. Monitors for equipment and/or supplies in need of repair or replacement and notifies appropriate department personnel.
  7. Sorts, assembles, and packs surgical instruments, trays, and supplies following established protocol, recipe card, and/or manufacturer’s instructions.
  8. Assembles case carts for surgeries.
  9. Monitors and maintains shelf inventory in the Operating Room and Sterile Processing department.
  10. Flexes work hours to support the needs of the department and overtime if appropriate.

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to rotate call and weekends


LEVEL I (150): No additional minimum requirements

LEVEL II (160): Five years of experience as a Sterile Processing Instrument Technician


  • Certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing or other Sterile Processing credible credentialing programs
  • Prior Sterile Processing or Operating Room related experience
