The Phlebotomist performs a variety of duties, including blood collection from patients of all ages, collection of body fluid specimens (i.e. urine) and cultures, and other departmental functions under the supervision of a Medical Technologist. Phlebotomists may spend their shifts performing mandated and submitted draws, preparing testing for the Medical Technologist, or running, distributing, and handing out labels for new draws. Accuracy and attention to detail are incredibly important to ensure that patients receive the correct care in a timely manner. Phlebotomists initial, date, and record time of collection on all forms and collect timed and stat specimens within a specified amount of time. Additionally, they stock phlebotomy supplies, send and retrieve blood from the tube station, utilize various computer programs and logs, and carry a Vocera, surgery phone, and star 3 pager.
On the job training is offered for Phlebotomists, as well as flexible shift schedules. There are also opportunities to advance to Phlebotomist II and Phlebotomist III or to transition to other roles. This position provides opportunities for growth with a variety of procedures and patients that are not present in most outpatient settings.
