Job Description

To manage all activities in single or multiple areas of responsibility concentrating on organizational, technical and financial performance of the department(s); to participate in testing procedures on patients of all ages; and to resolve problems specific to broad based division function.

Qualifications

Education:

  • College graduate, Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or equivalent required.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or equivalent required. If hired prior to September 2014, five years supervisory experience within a medical lab may be considered in lieu of registration.

Experience:

  • Three to five years of experience as a medical laboratory scientist required.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Light to moderate physical effort.

Responsibilities

  1. Schedule workload of multiple departments/locations to ensure adequate coverage and adequate days off, holiday and vacation for employees.

  1. Perform performance appraisals on staff under their leadership.

  1. Evaluate, make recommendations for pay adjustments, interview, manage staff behavior and, where necessary, perform disciplinary action for supervised employees.

  1. Review labor distribution reports, monthly variance reports, monthly operating statements, account activity detail and other management reports, making necessary adjustments in section operations to ensure positive budget variance for their division.

  1. Assist in the preparation of yearly division/departmental budget.

  1. Review and sign procedures in their areas of responsibility on an annual basis to ensure completeness and conformity with applicable standards, especially College of American Pathologists (CAP) requirements.

  1. Direct the evaluation and set up new procedures, equipment and instrumentation.

  1. Test patient samples, quality control materials and other specimens to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patient conditions.

  1. Order and prepare reagents, supplies and materials utilized in the department(s), supervise or delegate such responsibilities.

  1. Set up schedule of preventative maintenance for calibration and repairs of instrument and test equipment. Trouble-shoot equipment and procedures as needed to assure patient safety through effective accurate testing.

  1. Conserve hospital resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to perform job duties.

  1. Contribute to departmental operations by performing other related duties as may be required and/or assigned.

  1. Contributes to providing a great customer experience by assisting patients, visitors, physicians to resolve expressed concerns, and by demonstrating a welcoming and helpful attitude.

  1. Conforms to Memorial Medical Center strategic plan and behavioral standards.

  1. Support the Mission, Vision and Values of Memorial Medical Center and strive to provide the most cost effective, accurate, and timely patient testing possible within their ability to impact workflow and decision making.

  1. Performs other related work as required or requested.
